T. B. Scott Library’s Community ArtShare program originated in 2006 with a $10,000 grant from the Mead Witter Foundation, Inc. with which secure display cases, easels, and other items were procured that have enabled the library to become a place for local artists and collectors to display their creations and hobbies. Displays featuring one or more artists or collectors are featured each month on an ongoing basis.
Photography of Tom Algire
June – July 2018
A photography exhibit featuring the work of the late local resident Tom Algire is the latest display for the Community ArtShare at T.B. Scott Library. These amazing pieces are on exhibit on the library’s second floor & third floor through the month of July.
Featured artist Tom Algire was born in Washington DC but lived in Gleason and raised 3 children in our community. Tom’s love of photography began in high school with a gift of a camera from his Grandfather. Algire’s work features primarily large format scenic landscapes. One of his best known works was providing the photographs for the book “Sand County Almanac Illustrated”.
Algire traveled extensively throughout the United States photographing the natural wonders of our country’s national parks, lighthouses, waterfalls and wilderness regions. Tom was particularly drawn to John Muir and his treks through California’s Sierra Nevada’s.
The featured photographs are just a small part of the larger collection, many of which appear in the books, magazines and calendars that accompany the exhibit. In 1988, Tom was awarded the prestigious Ansel Adams prize for photography from the Sierra Club which promotes awareness of the environment and environmental protection.
Please visit the library to view this exhibit and all the wondrous things our library has to offer. T. B. Scott Library’s “Beyond Books: Community ArtShare” features a new exhibit every two months on an ongoing basis. The program was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Mead Witter Foundation, Inc. of Wisconsin Rapids.
